A key step in advancing standardisation for sustainable waste upcycling, ensuring consistency and quality across industries.
Agro2Circular has achieved a significant milestone with the publication of CWA 18149:2024—”Guidelines for characterization of extracts for the recycling/upcycling of organic agrifood wastes (AGRO2CIRCULAR)”.
This has been published by CEN and it’s available in CWA download area.
This achievement is a key part of A2C’s commitment to advancing standardisation in the fields of agrifood waste and plastic upcycling, because standardisation plays a crucial role by ensuring consistency, safety, and quality across different regions and industries. Establishing clear methodologies and guidelines is essential to promote the widespread adoption of sustainable practices. Standardisation allows these methods to be recognized, trusted, and implemented by a broad range of stakeholders, from small businesses to large corporations.
This success was a collaborative effort of multiple partners of the project: DMC was responsible for drafting the method that would set the standards for waste characterization in the upcycling process. UNE took the lead in connecting with the relevant working groups at CEN and navigating the steps necessary to publish the agreement. The result was the the creation of a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA)—a collaborative platform that brings together experts to develop consensus-based guidelines quickly.
The CWA now serves as an official reference that can be downloaded from CEN’s online portal, helping to align future practices in agrifood waste upcycling with the methodologies developed by Agro2Circular.
The project is particularly grateful to Jose Manuel de la Torre from DOMCA and Ana Benedicto from UNE for their hard work and dedication throughout this process.
