Agro2Circular shines at SETAC Europe with innovative approaches to circular agri-food solutions

At the Gothenburg event, Agro2Circular discussed sustainability and showcased life cycle assessments, including a breakthrough case study on upcycling lemon waste.

Agro2Circular participated in SETAC Europe 26th LCA Symposium, a three-day conference held from 21-23 October 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The event was jointly organized by the Swedish Life Cycle Center. The program was targeted for LCA practitioners in all fields from academy to industries and it included platform presentation sessions, posters, and key note speakers, with breaks to interact with old and new LCA colleagues.

Agro2Circular was present in the symposium with two partners from VTT working with Agro2Circular’s sustainability assessments of the project demos, Essi Paronen and Eveliina Hylkilä. They presented a poster about A2C, one about the “Agro2Circular Circular Solution Life Cycle Assessment Approach” focusing on the characteristics of a circular agri-food LCA and one titled “Life Cycle Assessment of agri-food waste utilization- case study example of lemon waste enzymatic extraction” focusing on the results from lemon waste upcycling case in A2C. They both had also a corresponding “poster spotlight presentation” with a short presentation about their work.

The poster areas were packed with interesting presentations from different fields, e.g. social LCA, batteries, food, aviation and chemicals. A2C posters generated interest and the poster sessions raised good discussions, for example about the amount of discarded food waste, the opportunities in utilizing the same waste for producing higher value products and the shared challenges of complex circular LCAs.

The three-day symposium was full of interesting developments in the field of environmental sustainability and beyond, and the symposium overall gave ideas of how to divide environmental burdens according to different frameworks, how to add planetary boundaries in LCA and how to handle biogenic carbon in LCAs.
